Co-Owner

I am a licensed professional counselor in the District of Columbia and co-owner of M&K Counseling Associates Inc. I have over 15 years of work experience in various behavioral health settings. My professional efforts focused on providing equitable and inclusive healthcare to culturally diverse populations. I want to personally ensure that M&K Counseling Associates Inc delivers exceptional counseling and psychotherapy services while considering every individual’s financial situation.

Jami Murray, Ed.D, LPC-DC-VA, LCPC-MD, NCC
Co-Owner

I am a co-owner of M&K Counseling Associates Inc and have over 20 years of professional experience in leadership, supervisory, and practitioner roles in various behavioral health settings. I’m a licensed professional counselor in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia and earned a doctorate degree in Counselor Education and Supervision. I am also an adjunct professor at George Mason University’s College of Education and Human Development Clinical Counseling Program. In my practice, I have helped a diverse population of clients overcome a variety of challenges related to anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, family conflict, career or academic stressors, and relationship concerns. I also have extensive knowledge working with mental illness, motivation challenges, LGBTQIA populations, and domestic abuse.

Partnering with individuals to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and overcome their obstacles is my passion. I have worked with a diverse population of clients in the non-profit sector for the last 5 years. During which time I have worked with adults, teens, and children, including veterans and members of the LGBTQIA community, to develop strategies that allow them to achieve their goals. I have experience with a wide range of mental health diagnoses, trauma, substance use, and domestic violence. I believe building our understanding of how our brains and emotions work empowers each of us to live life more fully.

I am a bilingual Spanish-English licensed professional counselor serving clients in Virginia and the District of Columbia. During the early 1990's, I was an AIDS epidemic advocate who worked with families and individuals living with this disease.

I come to the world of therapy with a focus on mindfulness. After working a few years in communications and teaching yoga in the community, I realized I make the most impact working one on one with individuals who want to be more present in their lives. I have been sharing the benefits of mindfulness meditation with the people of the DMV for more than five years. I have a strong interest in utilizing these practices to help individuals experiencing trauma and emotional distress heal, so they can move forward by focusing on their life goals.

I approach counseling by creating an open, collaborative environment to empower clients to build self-compassion and define their identity on their own terms. As a queer person from an Indian-American family, I am passionate about centering my clients’ cultural contexts and intersectional identities since they play a role in how we all view the world. I primarily work with adolescent and young adult clients who may struggle with anxiety, ADD/ADHD, trauma, eating disorders and OCD. I also have experience working with the LGBTQ+ community and individuals who want to explore their racial and ethnic identity. I integrate Narrative therapy, which will center our sessions around the stories that we all carry about ourselves and the world around us.

I identify as a queer, transracially adopted, Korean-American woman and feel it can be beneficial to be transparent about these aspects of myself with clients based on my drive to work with individuals in diverse communities.

As a graduate of George Washington University’s clinical mental health counseling program, I was able to practice evidence-based approaches at their community psychotherapy clinic. I enjoy having the opportunity to work closely with clients from different cultural backgrounds and those who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Participating in therapy reflects your commitment to growth, hope, and a deep desire for well-being. My goal as a clinician is to provide a safe space for you to explore the parts of yourself and your life that you want to understand, make peace with, and perhaps change. I believe wellness is a human right. And so, I am committed to cultivating a non-judgmental, antiracist, gender-affirming, as well as body- and sex-positive environment. I come to this work with a 20-year career, and advanced degree, in public health spanning the fields of HIV/STD and substance use harm reduction, health disparities, and environmental health with a focus on climate change. This work informs my core belief that we must consider the whole of our lives, our past and present surroundings, in order to fully understand our beliefs and actions. I can’t wait to meet you! I work under the mentorship and supervision of M&K Counseling Associates’ senior staff.

I am a nonjudgmental, empathetic, and supportive counseling intern who approaches counseling from a curiosity standpoint. I am eager to learn more about clients and their individual experiences in the world. Our unique stories make us who we are, and I provide space for clients to explore all aspects of themselves. I completed my practicum at the Community Counseling Services Center (CCSC) at George Washington University working with clients from a variety of cultural backgrounds and with a wide range of presenting concerns including but not limited to work/life balance, anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship challenges, self-esteem, identity issues, grief/loss, and family dynamics. I also have previous experience working with children on course performance, behavior, and social-emotional learning. I strive to be holistic, and I care to learn about clients as people both in and outside of the counseling space. I work under the supervision and guidance of Joanne Kim & Dr. Murray; co-owners of M&K Counseling Associates.
